A simple cover showing a beach scene with young lovers smiling and kissing does not prepare the reader for the amount of sorrow and anguish that the manga holds. Upon examination,
Socrates in Love
looks like a romantic-comedy with the vivid watercolor cover that has a simple drawing. This is one of the few times there are smiles on anybody's face in the story. Once the cover is breached the manga digs into your heart with cold nails and doesn't let go.
This is a tragic story of a young couple, Matsumoto Sakutaro and his girlfriend Hirose Aki, and how their relationship endures after Aki becomes ill. When the doctors diagnose Aki with "aplastic anemia" (a failure of the bone marrow to create red-blood cells) she becomes a permanent resident of the hospital. As time progresses, Sakutaro learns that Aki actually has leukemia (cancer of the bone marrow) - a much more serious malady. Saku is torn between telling Aki the truth and trying to maintain her remaining shred of happiness and life.
While heart-wrenching,
Socrates in Love
is extremely gripping and emotional. The story is intense from the very first page which makes it very difficult to put down. After reading the story, it's impossible not to consider your own mortality and be grateful for what you already have. While I have coped with the horrors of cancer in my own family, it was still very eye-opening to get a sense of how others across race, ethnic and gender lines have dealt with the treatment and aftermath. The ending was touching with a sense of both closure and the ultimate moral that there is a tomorrow to look forward to no matter how grim today might seem.
This is a must-read for everybody, manga fans and non. It's a story about humanity and shows the darker, real side of manga. For the masses that consider anime and manga nothing more than "cartoons and comic books",
Socrates in Love
shows that there is much more than just Magical Girls and "sweat drops".

Socrates in Love by Kazumi Kazui is the manga adaptation of the all-time best-selling novel in Japan named Sekachu by Kyoichi Katayama. Two middle school students develop a friendship that leads to a very sweet relationship. Aki and Sakutaro or "Saku-Chan" as Aki calls him, are just as much best friends as they are a couple. They are very much in love and Sakutaro has already decided that Aki will be his wife one day. But when Aki suddenly falls ill, Sakutaro finds himself struggling with trying to remain upbeat for Aki while secretly agonizing about her condition.
The story explores their relationship by alternating between the present and the past and is told from Sakutaro’s point of view. Since the story is about coping with a loved one’s illness, keep the tissues nearby. This may be especially hard for any reader who has watched someone they love suffer from a challenging disease.
The book is a one-part story which makes it good for when you want a quick read. The illustrator, Kazumi Kazui, provides graphic artwork that is able to convey the strong emotions of this story. The end of the novel features the first excerpt from the novel version. Since I thoroughly enjoyed the manga, I look forward to reading the novel and watching the movie and television show that were inspired by this touching love story. In addition to the manga, VIZ also published the novel. This could pave the
way to bring over many other popular Japanese books that were translated
into anime and manga, such as
12 Kingdoms
,
Slayers
and
Crest of the Stars
.
